Have you ever experienced rashes or allergic reactions after taking medication? An allergic reaction to drugs is referred to as a drug allergy, which occurs when your body's immune system responds to medications. It happens when one of the drug's components triggers a heightened sensitivity, with your body perceiving it as a dangerous foreign invader. Subsequent exposure to the same drug leads to your immune system producing antibodies to eliminate it.
Drug allergies can be life-threatening. If you or a loved one shows severe medication allergy symptoms like tongue or throat swelling, breathing difficulties, low blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, or loss of consciousness, immediate action is imperative.
One of the most common drug allergies is associated with penicillin.
Compared to allergic reactions to medications, non-allergic reactions are far more frequent. Because of the characteristics of the medications being used, they are also typically predictable. Depending on the medication, non-allergic drug responses might present with a variety of symptoms. For example, patients on chemotherapy frequently experience nausea and hair loss. Some antibiotics might irritate the intestines, which can result in diarrhoea and cramping in the stomach.
