International Albinism Awareness Day…!!!

“Albinism is not defined by the absence of color; it is defined by the presence of strength, resilience and courage.”

International Albinism Awareness Day is observed every year on June 13th to spread awareness about a genetic skin condition called Albinism.Albinism is a rare genetic disease that causes the skin, hair, and eyes to have little or no pigmentation (melanin), making them sensitive to the sun and bright light. Albinism is a health disease that is not infectious, but almost everyone with it has trouble seeing and is more likely to get skin cancer. People with albinism live in constant fear of being killed in many parts of the world, especially in Africa. Others face extreme discrimination and bullying.
The theme for International Albinism Awareness Day in 2023
This year, International Albinism Awareness Day has the theme “Inclusion is Strength.” It talks about how important it is to include people with albinism of all races and groups, as well as young people, women, children, and older people. It also says that different groups, like human rights groups that are not directly involved with the albinism movement, need to work together.
History of International Albinism Awareness Day
During the middle of the 2000s, Tanzania had a big problem with albinism. People think that the country has the largest number of albinos. In the African country, hundreds of them have been killed and cut up in horrible ways over the past few decades. People in the area believe that their body parts can bring happiness and wealth. The idea that albinos are bad souls is also very common. The Tanzania Albinism Society (TAS) and other NGOs fought for the human rights of albinos. On May 4, 2006, they held the first Albino Day. Since 2009, it has been known as National Albino Day.

The UNHRC passed a motion in 2013 called “Attacks and discrimination against people with albinism.” This UN decision called for attacks and discrimination against people with albinism to stop since the condition is still very poorly known, both socially and medically. People with albinism are often the subject of false beliefs and stories that are fueled by superstition. This makes them more likely to be left out of society and to face different kinds of shame and discrimination.
In the end, on December 18, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) voted to make June 13 International Albinism Awareness Day, starting in 2015. In answer to a request from civil society groups, the UNGA on March 26, 2015, formed the position of Independent Expert on the enjoyment of human rights by people with albinism.

Meaning of International Albinism Awareness Day
Albinos in Madagascar faced kidnappings and killings in 2022. Every year, there needs to be an International Albinism Awareness Day to raise awareness about the human rights of Albinos around the world and to protest attacks on them. Medtotes spread awareness about albinism and that everyone regardless of skin colour or physical appearance deserves respect and equal treatment.
